1 head green cabbage, finely shredded
2 large carrots, finely shredded
3/4 cup best-quality mayonnaise
2 tablespoons sour cream (or vegan sour cream)
2 tablespoons grated Spanish onion
2 tablespoons sugar, or to taste
2 tablespoons white vinegar
1 tablespoon dry mustard
2 teaspoons celery salt
Salt and freshly ground pepper
Of course, I make adaptations to reduce/eliminate the mayonnaise, and to reduce/eliminate the sour cream for a vegan (summer-proof) version. Replace the mayo with dijon mustard and reduce the dry mustard to 1 teaspoon, or to taste. I also don't use celery salt at all. You could grate an inch of celery if you want that addition.
